Your support and encouragement can be very important as they try to quit - and to help them stay quit. Here are some tips on how you can help: </p><div class="wrapper-container"><ul><li>Don't argue with or nag them about their smoking - but support them when they choose to quit.</li><li>Let them know where they can find help and support to quit.</li><li>Suggest going to places where people don't smoke.</li><li>Go walking or exercising with them.</li><li>Be there for them! The Advisor will help you understand the smoking addiction – you will identify the reasons why you smoke and come up with new ways to cope. You’ll get tips and suggestions on how to beat cravings.</p><p>Many Advisors are ex-smokers themselves and know what quitting is like. We’ll also send you a free Quit Pack with helpful info and a Quit Card. Quit Cards can be taken to your local pharmacy and redeemed to get subsidised nicotine patches, gum and lozenges. We’ll also follow up to see how you are getting on.</p><p>If you've contacted us before and started smoking again, feel free to call or text again. Our online support includes: </p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h5>Quit Stats</h5><p>By entering the number of cigarettes or amount of tobacco you smoked, we'll tell you how much money you've saved since you quit. Quit Stats also keep track of how many days you've been smokefree and the total number of cigarettes you HAVEN'T smoked since you quit. It's a way of giving you a pat on the back and will help keep you motivated.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h5>Your Quit Plan</h5><p>To keep yourself on track you can make an online plan to quit smoking and stay smoke-free. You’ll enter things like your goals and reasons for quitting, smoking triggers and strategies for not smoking.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h5>Quit Blogs</h5><p>Our  <a  href='/community/blogs/all'>blog community</a> is a forum for thousands of New Zealanders who have either quit, want to quit or are quitting now. You can share your story and read those of others. The blog community will connect you with others who know what it's like to quit smoking. Online <br/>Support

<div><div class="wrapper-container"><p>Through Quitline you can get nicotine patches, gum or lozenges for $5 (to be paid to the pharmacy you pick up from).</p><h4>How Patches, Gum and Lozenges Work</h4><p>Using patches, gum and lozenges for eight weeks can double your chances of quitting. They will reduce your cigarette cravings without damaging your health. They work by replacing some of the nicotine you usually get from cigarettes or tobacco.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Medical Conditions</h4><p>Some medical conditions require specialist advice on using nicotine patches, gum and lozenges. If any of the following applies to you, please call Quitline:</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><ul><li>You are pregnant or breastfeeding</li><li>You are a diabetic on insulin</li><li>You are taking medication for a mental health condition</li><li>You weigh less than 45 kilos (7 stone)</li><li>You have had a heart attack, stroke or severe angina in the last two weeks.</li></ul></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>How To Order</h4><p>You can order subsidised nicotine patches, gum and lozenges by calling us on  <a href='tel:0800778778'>0800 778 778</a>, texting us on  <a href='sms:4006'>4006</a> or online when you  <a href='/register'>register</a>. We’ll send you a Quitcard to take to redeem at your local pharmacy.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Cost</h4><p>A 4 week supply of one of these products costs around $5 with the option of a free repeat. Some people don’t like the taste at first, but you do get used to it.</li><li>Repeat this 5-6 times over a 30 minute period.</li><li>Do not drink when using the gum, or for up to 15 minutes afterwards because you can also get a sore stomach and hiccups this way. The gum also won’t work properly help your cravings.</li><li>Most people use 8-12 pieces in a 24 hour period. If patches fail to stick properly, talk to Quitline on <a href='tel:0800778778'>0800 778 778</a> or text us on   <a href='sms:4006'>4006</a>. </li><li>Don't cut patches.</li><li>Place on smooth, clean, dry skin (where no perfumes or lotions have been applied)</li><li>Wash your hands after handling the patch.</li><li>If you have vivid dreams when sleeping, remove the patch before you go to bed but apply a new one first thing in the morning.</li><li>Throw the patch away safely out of the reach of children and pets.</li></ul></div><div class='hc-video'><iframe src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/GUvnvq1vs7w' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen=''></iframe></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Side effects for patches, gum and lozenges</h4><p>Patches, gum and lozenges are very safe, and serious side effects are rare.</p><p>Sometimes patches can cause a slight reddening and itching of the skin. This is less likely if you change the area you apply the patch to on a daily basis. Also remember to apply the patch to clean, dry skin that does not have lotion or perfume on it. If the patch comes off try medical tape.</p><p>Gum and lozenges might give you a slightly irritated mouth and throat and more saliva (spit) than usual. If you chew or suck the gum or lozenges too often, you might swallow too much nicotine and this can cause wind, hiccups and indigestion.</p><p>If you experience any side effects, call Quitline on  <a href='tel:0800778778'>0800 778 778</a> (or by texting  <a href='sms:4006'>4006</a>) or see your pharmacist. </p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Weaning off/Cutting down on nicotine</h4><p>If you haven't been smoking during the first eight weeks, congratulations! You are now smokefree and you may want to try stopping patches/gum/lozenges as well.Research shows that it is best to just stop using patches/gum/lozenges altogether or order some more of the same dose rather than cut down. </p><p>There are three parts of an addiction and the patches/gum/lozenges help you control the nicotine part of an addiction. If you want to stop relying on nicotine it’s best to stop taking gum/patches/lozenges altogether and be prepared for any withdrawal symptoms you may have. Secondhand smoke kills around 350 New Zealanders every year. Secondhand smoke contains the same poisonous chemicals that you breathe into your body when you smoke.</p><p>Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to develop asthma. They are also more likely to develop coughs, colds and ear infections. Even if you don’t smoke around your baby or children, the poisonous chemicals from tobacco will stay in your clothes and can still do them harm.</p><p>Children and teenagers whose parentts or caregivers smoke are seven times more likely to become smokers themselves. You’ll be setting them a great example by quitting. Plus, you’re likely to live longer to enjoy your family and friends.</p></div></div>

<div><div class="wrapper-container"><p>If you are pregnant, quitting smoking is one of the best decisions you will ever make, for you and your baby.</p><h4>The effects of smoking</h4><p>When you smoke, poisons enter your bloodstream, then pass through the placenta to baby. These poisons harm your baby’s health. This puts baby at risk of numerous problems including glue ear, asthma, leukemia and Sudden Unexplained Death in Infancy (SUDI). Even if you have smoked for some of your pregnancy, quitting now will make baby healthier.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>How Quitline can help</h4><p>Quitline offers phone and text support specially designed to help pregnant women quit smoking. We’ll be there for you throughout your pregnancy and after your baby is born. If you like, we will also talk to your partner/family about helping you to quit and making your home smoke-free. <div><div class="wrapper-container"><p>Did you know, in New Zealand, sales of cigarettes and tobacco are worth more than $1.3 billion every year. </p><p>Tobacco companies sell the only consumer product that kills people when used as the manufacturer intends. </p><p>Until recently, the tobacco industry has denied all or most of the health effects from smoking and secondhand smoke.But court action in the United States shows that for more than 50 years the tobacco industry has been aware of theharm smoking causes. </p><p>The industry is against smokefree policies. For example, people who have to go outside to have a cigarette end upsmoking less and even quitting. This means the tobacco industry loses profits. </p><p>The tobacco industry markets ‘light’ and ‘mild’ cigarettes as safer. In fact these cigarettes carry the same risk oflung cancer, heart attacks and other tobacco-caused diseases as ‘regular’ cigarettes. </p><p>Do you really want to give the tobacco industry your money?</p></div></div>

<div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Cravings</h4></div><div class="wrapper-container"> If you experience cravings, remember the 4 Ds: <p><strong>Delay</strong> - delay acting on the urge to smoke. Don't open a pack or light a cigarette. After a few minutes, the urge to smoke will pass. </p><p><strong>Deep breath</strong> – take a long slow breath in, and breathe out slowly again. Repeat three times. </p><p><strong>Drink water</strong> – sip it slowly, holding it in your mouth a little longer to savour the taste. </p><p><strong>Do something else</strong> – take your mind off smoking by taking action – put on some music, go for a walk, ring a friend and keep your hands busy. </p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Stress</h4><p>A lot of people feel anxious and panicky about life without cigarettes. You might have been in the habit of lighting up at stressful times, such as when you're stuck in traffic, or when things have gone wrong for you, or when you've had an argument. You might have smoked when you were bored, or to give yourself 'time out'. 	<br /><br /> You need to find new ways to deal with stress. For example, you might like to try: 	<br /><br /> Talking to someone close to you – perhaps an ex-smoker </p><ul><li> Listening to music</li><li>Squeezing a stressball</li><li>Saying a karakia, prayer or affirmation</li><li> Screaming, shouting (warn people first!)</li><li>Buying yourself something with some of the money you've saved by not smoking</li><li>Going for a walk</li><li>Reading a good book</li><li>Taking a hot bath</li><li>Playing a game outside with your family</li><li>Reminding yourself of the reasons you want to quit</li></ul><p> If you think that you may be depressed you may want to check out the  <a href="http://www.depression.org.nz/" target="_blank" title="Link opens in new window">Ministry of Health's Depression website</a>. </p></div></div>

Cravings and stress

<div><div class="wrapper-container"><p>Recent research in New Zealand has shown that people who give up smoking do not permanently put on weight. However, this is something that many people worry about when they quit. </p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4> Food Cravings</h4> It's important to remember you are not going on a diet – you are quitting smoking. You may notice you crave sugary foods when you first quit. This is because cigarettes are deliberately sweetened to make them taste better and stimulate the release of your body’s own sugar reserves. You can keep on top of sugar cravings by having fruit or sugar-free gum on hand. </div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4> Your Metabolism</h4> Smoking does increase the rate of your metabolism, but the effect on your weight is very small and actually puts a strain on your heart. Your metabolic rate will return to normal when you quit. In addition, nicotine from tobacco also suppresses your appetite so when you stop smoking your appetite returns. </div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4> Your Appearance</h4> If you are appearance-conscious, remember that smoking harms your appearance too. It makes you look older and unhealthy by starving your skin of oxygen, making it look dry and grey. You get wrinkles around your eyes and mouth much earlier than a non-smoker and the tar stains your teeth and fingers. Weight Gain

It doesn’t mean that you’ve failed or that you might as well keep on smoking.  </p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><p> You will have had your own reasons for going back to smoking. Perhaps you:</p><ul ><li>Were triggered by another smoker?</li><li>Had a crisis in your life?</li><li>Quit when the time wasn’t right?</li><li>Stopped using your nicotine patches, gum or lozenges too soon?</li><li>Still think of yourself as a ‘smoker’?</li><li>Thought it would be okay to have ‘just one’?</li></ul></div><div class="wrapper-container"><p> It’s important to remember that quitting is a journey. Most people try more than once to quit smoking. It’s the same as learning any new skill – you learn from your mistakes and keep trying.</p><p>Think about why you wanted to quit in the first place. Those reasons are still good ones. You’ve stopped before and you can stop again. Yes, it may be hard work, but you’ve done other hard things before. For your first few weeks as a non-smoker you may wish to avoid situations with alcohol - it can lower your inhibitions so you think less about the consequences of having a cigarette. </p><p>Try these tips if you get cravings when you drink or in social situations: </p><ul><li>Avoid alcohol until you feel stronger, as it can lower your inhibitions</li><li>Stay inside or in non smoking areas</li><li>Try out drinking through a straw</li><li>Let people know you have quit – and ask them not to offer you cigarettes</li><li>Choose non-smoking thoughts or affirmations to use e.g. 'I am in control of my life – cigarettes don't control me'.</li><li>Keep your hands and mouth busy with a straw, toothpick or lollipop You could also try texting, marbles, or a stress ball</li><li>Have an escape plan if things get too much</li></ul></div></div>

In March 2015, two new television advertisements (Phase Two) were developed. The first ad, ‘Disrespect’ shows the moment when the parents realise that their kids are smoking because they want to be like them.</p><p>The Crayons campaign was developed by Māori Television in August 2014. It targets people in high smoking prevalence populations and aims to  encourage quitting  by showing the negative impact smoking has on children. The campaign focuses on children who come from a loving, happy home in which the adults around them smoke. As a result, the children believe smoking is normal. The video depicts a very sick man on oxygen who rises from his hospital bed to share a ‘last dance’ with his wife to the song ‘Que Sera, Sera’ as their son watches on. The main message of this campaign is encourage smokers that ‘What will be, doesn't have to be’. The ads end with a piece to camera by Quitline CEO Paula Snowden, encouraging smokers who know it’s time to quit to contact Quitline. Much like our previous video diaries, the campaign follows Chad's quitting journey as he gets help through Quitline and challenges people to quit smoking with him.</p><div class='hc-image'><img alt="chad chambers image"   src="/static/images/pages/chad-chambers-00.jpg"/></div></div><div class="wrapper-container"><a href="/media#the-new-chad">Click here to see the campaign.</a><h4>Five Times More Likely (2012)</h4><p>In October 2012 we refreshed our TV advertising to promote the message that you're five times more likely to successfully quit smoking if you use our services.</p><p><b>Advertisements in English and Teo Reo Maori</b></p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>The New You (2012)</h4><p>Quitline’s advertising campaign the New You showed six of our clients using Quitline services (e.g. one person uses the phone, one the blogs, another QuitStats and another Txt2Quit). As each person uses the Quitline service, we see them leaving their ‘old self’ behind and transforming into their new happy smokefree self. There are both English and Maori versions of the advertisements. Messages in the core advertisements will be reinforced by a series of 15 second advertisements.			<br /><br /> During the taping of these ads, the clients were interviewed for their story about how and why they used to smoke. (2011)</h4><p>The 'Don't Give up, Quit.' Campaign was launched in January 2011 coinciding with both the New Year and the January tax increase on tobacco products. The campaign reinforces the fact that in 2010, 11,000 New Zealanders successfully quit smoking with help from the Quitline. The message to all smokers is that every hour a kiwi successfully quits smoking. The ads encourage everyone to make this their hour and get in touch - It's the very best way to turn that New Year's resolution into a reality. </p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Pregnancy Campaign (2009)</h4><p>The Pregnancy campaign advertisement was created for winter 2009, and features real Quitline advisors. The ad highlights the dangers of smoking while pregnant.    </p><div class='hc-video'><iframe    src="//www.youtube.com/embed/dn2n2NQWeL4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Health Warnings (2008)</h4><p>The Health Warnings campaign began in June 2008, timed to coincide with the Ministry of Health's roll-out of 	<a href="http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/indexmh/tobacco-warnings" target="_blank" title="Link opens in new window">graphic pack warnings</a>on cigarette packets.	<br /><br /> The first series of ads showed the impact of a lifetime of smoking on Adrian Pilkington, who was diagnosed with oral cancer - cancer of the mouth, nose or throat- and has had his tongue removed. He now speaks through a'trachy' device and cannot eat normally.	</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><p>Sadly, Adrian passed away in September 2009. On the 5th anniversary of his death we shared the following tribute on Facebook, in the hopes that Adrian's story would continue to inspire other smokers to quit.	</p><div class='hc-image'><img alt="tribute to adrian"   src="/static/images/pages/tribute-to-adrian.jpg"/></div><p>The second series of adverts, shown between April and June 2009, featured former smoker Keith, who suffers from emphysema. Fighting for every breath, Keith says that smoking has literally 'sucked the life' out of him. </p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Christmas Campaign (2008)</h4><p>The Christmas campaign advertisements were created for the 08/09 Christmas and New Year Period. They feature real Quitline Advisors encouraging smokers to call Quitline over the holiday period. </p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Txt2Quit (2008)</h4><p>The Txt2Quit campaign went online on 17th June 2008.	<br /><br /> Advertisements for Txt2Quit feature on the 'Smoking Not Our Future' campaign created by Auahi Kore / Smokefree and include our Txt2Quit end-frame. 	</p></div><div class='hc-video'><iframe   src="//www.youtube.com/embed/dS33gjuGZWk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Video Diaries</h4><p> Video Diaries follows smokers as they make their quit attempt. These documentary style commercials feature real smokers and are unscripted.		<br /><br /> Every series of Video Diaries is different because no quit attempt is ever the same. The raw emotions and struggle of quitting is evident with each quitter and the commercials also show the strategies each smoker uses to quit.

It is a ‘threat-appeal’ campaign, adapted from the National Australian Tobacco Campaign.	<br /><br /> The seven commercials - <em>lung, brain, aorta, tumour, lung/tar, heart attack and eye</em> - pull no punches about the devastating effects smoking has on the body. There are images of fatty aortas, rotting lungs, tumours, blind eyes and a blood-clotted brain.	<br /><br /> The heart attack ad features a Samoan smoker and is aimed at encouraging Pacific peoples to quit smoking. 	</p></div></div>

    <p>As part of our commitment to providing the best possible service to our Quitline callers
    and web site users, Quitline records information about Quitline callers and people
    registered on the Web site in a database so that they do not have to provide the same
    details each time they use our services. This is necessary as callers usually speak to
    different staff each time they call the Quitline and it means the team can provide better
    support continuity.
    </p>
    <p>
    Quitline also records all telephone calls. We select a small percentage of these calls
    randomly for staff training purposes on a one-to-one basis. This helps improve the quality
    of the Quitline service, ensures that the quit smoking information provided is consistent
    and accurate and identifies ways of providing callers with a better service to assist them
    in quitting smoking.
    </p>

    The privacy of personal information is very important and we are committed to protecting
    the privacy of all Quitline callers and web site users. All database information and call
    recordings are stored securely, and accessed only by our trained staff.

    When you register with Quitline, the information comes to us and nothing is saved on the
    website. We do use cookies but only to remember your login. When you log back into this
    site using your password, the information you see and can update is held in our secure
    database, not on the website. The Quitline blogs can be viewed by anyone who visits the
    site. To contribute to the blogs, you need to register with Quitline.

<div><div class="wrapper-container"><p> Quitcard providers offer face-to-face support for people who want to quit smoking and distribute Quitcards for subsidised nicotine patches gum and lozenges. Quitline administers the Quitcards programme though a contract with the Ministry of Health.   </p><div class="wrapper-container"><h4>Want to become a Quitcard Provider?</h4><p>If you are interested in helping people quit smoking, you may want to become a Quitcard Provider. This means you can distribute Quitcards for subsidised nicotine patches, gum and lozenges. To be a Quitcard Provider you must be smokefree, and must fall under one of the following groups:</p><ul><li>Specialist stop smoking practitioners who have completed the  		<a href="http://inspiring.org.nz/" target="_blank" title="Link opens in new window">Stop Smoking Practitioners’ Programme</a>.		</li><li>People who are eligible to undertake, and complete, the Ministry of Health’s 		<a href="http://learnonline.health.nz/index.php">Helping people to stop smoking e-learning</a>, specifically:		</li></ul><ol><li>Health professionals regulated under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, excluding pharmacists (see below)</li><li>Medical students (3rd year and above)</li><li>Nursing students (3rd year and above)</li></ol></div><div class="wrapper-container"><p><span >Can Pharmacists become quit card providers?			<br /></span>No. Pharmacists remain unable to become Quitcard providers for the time being. This includes displaying ‘smoke-free’ signs. The series of 11 advertisements follow Angela, a smoker of 25 years, as she attempts to give up for good.	<br /><br />Angela's diaries were unique in a number of ways. They were the first video diaries to specifically portray the role of extended family and Whānau in supporting someone to quit smoking. They also highlighted the way that smoking affected Angela's life in a range of settings, including the many traditional Māori practices which are an everyday part of life for the Wallace Whānau. But there are many different types of advertisement, and many different audiences. These reports look at particular campaigns and their effectiveness.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container" ><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/crayons-tvcs-research-with-children-sept-2014.pdf">Children's Interpretations of the Crayons TVCs - September 2014</a></h4><p>In 2014 Quiltine developed series of TVCs focused on encouraging quitting by showing the negative impact that adults smoking have on children. The campaign responds to the primary research finding that to be effective the advertising needs to be hard-hitting and give an emotionally poignant reason to quit (impact on children). This document reports on a further phase of testing focused on how children interpret the TVCs. This phase of the research (undertaken for Quitline by Premium Research) was intended to identify whether there is a significant risk of the TVCs encouraging children to smoke.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container" ><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/research-summary-report-25-july-2014website.pdf">Research to Support Targeted Smoking Cessation, July 2014</a></h4><p>This document reports on a two-staged qualitative research programme commissioned by Quitline which looks at ways of encouraging people living in high deprivation communities and/or Māori people to quit smoking using mass media. It provides a summary of a two-staged qualitative research programme undertaken with people in the target communities.		<br /><br /> The overall aim of the research was to refresh Quitline’s understanding of how best to develop a communication campaign to target this audience. The first stage was exploratory research, intended to help Quitline increase its understanding of the target audience, how to encourage the audience to quit and how to support the target audience to quit. The research fieldwork was undertaken in May 2014. The second stage of the research tested five draft communication concepts to assess their effectiveness.		</p><p><span ><a href="/static/info-resources/Li-and-Grigg-Graphic-Warnings-and-Registrations-to-QL-Letter-TC-20090126.pdf">Graphic Warnings - Do They Work?</a><br /></span>Graphic warnings on tobacco products were introduced in New Zealand on 28 February 2008 and retailers had up to six months to comply. The warnings cover 30% of the front and 90% of the back of the packaging. Each warning label contains a picture depicting health effect(s) caused by smoking, and is enhanced by a warning message printed in both English and Te Reo Māori. Another positive aspect of the new warnings is a supportive cessation message included on the back of the packaging with the quitline number.	</p><p> The results indicate that the average number of new monthly registrations increased from 1517 before the introduction of the new warnings to 1729. Furthermore, from January 2008 onwards, there was a continuous increase in the percentage of new callers obtaining the quitline number from tobacco product packaging.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container" ><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/Grigg-Waa-et-al-IAW-Campaign-ANZJPH-20081215.pdf">It's about whānau - Targeted Media Campaigns</a></h4><p>This paper assesses the effects among Māori smokers and their whānau (the traditional Māori family unit) of a campaign called It's about whānau which was designed to support Māori smokers to quit smoking. Seventy-eight per cent of smokers and 73% of whānau were able to recall the campaign one year following its launch.	</p><p> The television commercials (TVCs) were consistently rated very believable or very relevant by over half of the smokers who had seen them. More than half of smokers (54%) stated that the campaign had made them more likely to quit. This nationwide mass media cessation campaign developed to deliver a cessation message to indigenous people was received positively by Māori smokers and their whānau and played a role in prompting quit attempts.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container" ><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/FINAL-Pack-Warnings-Evaluation-Post-Survey-full-report-20081113.pdf">The Adrian Campaign - hard-hitting ads, graphic pack warnings</a></h4><p>The Pack Warnings television campaign was designed to complement the introduction of pictorial health warnings on cigarette and tobacco packets in New Zealand. The Pack Warnings TVC campaign (the Adrian ad) was launched at the beginning of June 2008. The objectives of the Pack Warnings Ad Impact Evaluation were to determine the extent to which the Adrian ad reached the intended audiences; the extent to which the intended audiences understood the messages from the Adrian ad; the extent to which the intended audiences perceived the Adrian ad messages were credible; and the extent to which the intended audiences took action as a result of seeing the Adrian ad (eg calling Quitline, quitting smoking, discussing quitting smoking with a health professional).</p></div><div class="wrapper-container" ><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/FINAL-Litmus-report-Quitting-Motivations-and-Barriers.pdf">The Tipping Point - Quitting Motivations and Barriers</a></h4><p>This research provides insights and information about quitting that could be used in future media and communications campaigns, and wider strategy and initiative development. The 'tipping point' model was used as the foundation for the research analysis. At the tipping point, the downsides of smoking and/or the benefits of quitting outweigh the benefits of smoking, and/or the downsides of quitting.</p></div></div>

The New Zealand government offers low-cost NRT through the Quitline and the distribution of Quitcards, which can be exchanged at pharmacies for nicotine products. The following reports look at NRT in general, and its use through the Quitcard programme.	</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/FINAL-Quit-card-providers-analysis-20081124.pdf">Quitcard Providers - Who are they?</a></h4><p>This report analyses the number of Quitcard providers in District Health Boards for the period January 2005 to January 2008. The number of providers increased four-fold, from 267 in 2005 to 1183 in 2008. In 2008 almost half of the providers (47%) were general practices, followed by hospitals (9%) and Māori providers (9%). There were 20 providers per 10,000 NZ smokers in 2008, a significant increase from four providers per 10,000 smokers in 2005. The number of Māori providers more than doubled from 40 to 103.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/NRT-Redemption-Report-Jul-Dec-2007-FINAL-20090420.pdf">Quitcards - Are they being used? </a></h4><p>The aim of this report is to give an indication of the volume of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) distributed through Quit Services, between July and December 2007. It also calculates the redemption and redeemer rate of quit cards issued to clients and presents possible reasons for why clients don't redeem their cards. The redemption and redeemer rates were 60% and 74%, both being lower than the three preceding 6-month periods. Findings from the Quitline Evaluation shed some light on why some clients did not redeem their quit cards; 1) they weren't ready (33%); 2) they already had NRT (28%); 3) they didn't get around to redeeming it/were too busy (28%) and 4) were using alternative methods or products to quit (23%).</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/Perceptions-of-the-safety-and-efficacy-of-NRT-Final-20080617.pdf">NRT - Effectiveness and Safety</a></h4><p>Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a proven efficacious and safe aid for smoking cessation. However, initiation of NRT use remains low, and among those who do use the products insufficient dosages and early termination are common. Poor utilisation rates may result from commonly held misperceptions about the safety and efficacy of nicotine and NRT. This review found that the continued under-use of NRT appears to be sourced by negative expectations and safety concerns, which in turn result from knowledge deficits regarding nicotine and NRT products. Prior use of NRT and word-of-mouth appear to be the main formative source of smokers' expectations, and as such facilitating the correct usage of NRT products among those who do initiate use is crucial. Correct usage is more likely when smokers' knowledge about the role of nicotine and the safety and efficacy of NRT is more accurate.</p></div><div class="wrapper-container"><h4><a href="/static/info-resources/NRT_Online_20080812.pdf">NRT Online Report 2008</a></h4><p>The first major survey of Quitline's online nicotine replacement therapy service, introduced in 2007. It found that less intensive programmes had higher participation rates, and were also more cost effective than more intensive programmes. The report finds that while a desire to minimise the health risks of the unborn baby is the key motivator to quitting among pre-natal maternal smokers, the actual risks to the baby are poorly understood. There is also a very poor understanding of the appropriateness of the use of NRT during pregnancy and when breastfeeding among both pre-natal maternal smokers and health professionals; and there is a perception that the service is not appropriate for pregnant women.
