What are E-cigarettes?
E-cigarettes heat a liquid in order to produce a vapour you inhale, which is why smoking e-cigarettes is also known as "vaping". Some, but not all e-liquids contain nicotine and are available in different flavours.

How are e-cigarettes different from ordinary cigarettes?
E-cigarettes are relatively new and evolving products. They can still deliver nicotine, which is the addictive substance in tobacco, but without many of the harmful chemicals contained in standard cigarette smoke.

Are e-cigarettes safe?
Yes and no. The health risks associated with long-term use of e-cigarettes are unknown. E-cigarettes do seem to pose fewer health risks to smokers who switch completely from tobacco smoking to e-cigarette use.

Can vaping help me quit smoking?
Yes. There is growing evidence that suggests vaping is a useful tool to help you quit smoking tobacco. However, vaping in combination with Quitline’s free support makes you even more likely to successfully quit. We also suggest that the best end goal is to eventually ween yourself off e-cigarettes too.

Is vaping better than smoking?
Yes. You are exposed to less harmful chemicals in e-cigarettes than in tobacco. However, they are not completely harmless and still include low levels of toxic chemicals.

Can I ring Quitline if I am vaping?
Yes. We still provide free support to people using e-cigarettes.

Does Quitline provide subsidized e-cigarettes or nicotine e-liquids?
Not at this stage. Until more studies are done into the long-term safety of these products we are unable to provide subsidised access to them.

If I sign up for Quitline's support does using e-cigarettes count as smoking?
No. Quitline does not view using e-cigarettes as the same as smoking. Evidence has highlighted that e-cigarettes are up to 95% better for your health than smoking tobacco products and are considered a useful harm reduction tool. You are still considered smokefree if you are only using e-cigarettes and not smoking tobacco products.
