Coughing and laughing

avatar-icon
I've been on antibiotics since Tuesday for my bronchitis & am still coughing.

Make me laugh and I cough some more which is really unfortunate as it's the 3rd week of the NZ International Comedy festival and we have a lot of shows booked, plus several of our friends have comped us into their shows.

On the plus side, that coughing isn't as painful as it was in past years when I was dragging smoke into my infected lungs.

Another plus is I can now sit outside with my friends who happen to smoke without a noticeable trigger but the minus is that for the first time in I don't know how long the smoke from somebody else's cigarette made me cough. Please don't let me get permanently that sensitive. I refuse to be one of *those* ex-smokers.

Coughing up

avatar-icon
I've got a cold. It's settled on my lungs and if it hasn't showing signs of clearing by tomorrow I'm heading to the doctors.

It still sucks to have a chest cold, but at least its not as bad as it used to be when I smoked.

The coughing is the same, the nasty ghack to ensure it comes up and out and doesn't go back to the lungs is the same, but there are two great plusses: There's not that pain that inhaling smoke into inflamed lungs causes and there's not that nasty brown stain from the smoke.

Before I was ready to quit, chest colds were the time I most often told myself I must quit ... of course, I never listened to myself until I was ready but at least I knew.

[Edit] Carebear's comment below sums it up so well. Light cough to clear airways, drag on smoke, massive coughing fit ... continue until cigarette finished. It says so much about the power the addiction could have on us that we considered this acceptable. [/Edit]

Special Days

avatar-icon
The first hour smoke free is a victory, the first day, the second, 3rd, 7th day, 2nd week, 1 month, 3 months, 100 days ... Each an important victory.

The significant days all stand out in our minds but every single hour, every day is just as much a victory and wherever you are in your quit you have won each and every one of those struggles.

Smoking in old TV programme

avatar-icon
I need to produce a list of significant things in my journey to self realisation & one of the things that came to mind was how I reacted to a particular New Zealand produced one-off TV drama in the mid 1980s.

Having identified the drama, I was curious & I tracked it down to watch on-line. When I saw it 30 years ago I focused on one character who made an impact on me. Rewatching it now I am almost not noticing her character as I am more fixated on how needy the character of her man friend was but much more that that I am constantly distracted by the sheer number of cigarettes the characters in the play were smoking.

I can not imagine that we would show anything like that amount of smoking, and if characters were depicted as smoking it would be a major plot point. With this it was just in the background.

With all the casual background smoking in bars, restaurants and TV shows, giving up must have been so much harder then than today.

Feeling great again. I was having a few doubts, but last night I was on stage & after that was outside chatting away to the smokers ... no desire to suck on a cigarette at all.

Stay strong everyone.

Chesty head cold

avatar-icon
I've got a cold today & am coughing up nasty brown phlegm.

I was just thinking about the bad old days when I'd have this and it would physically hurt to inhale smoke yet I still managed to do it.

I'm so glad that those days are behind me.

Stats Update 900 days smokefree

avatar-icon
Smokefree days: 900 days
Cigarettes NOT smoked: 27000
Total savings: $24,210.00

I've been counting down to this for a couple of weeks. This morning I look at the 900 & instead of feeling great I'm thinking "Oh, OK. 900 days, just 3 months until 1,000" making it all a bit of an anticlimax.

Seems means I'm not as invested in counting the days as I once was. I guess this is part of the recovery process.

Stay strong everyone.
